Services & Impact

Little Opera is a 9-month after-school opera creation program that gives students of diverse backgrounds exposure to and training in multiple art forms at once.

Our San Francisco after-school program brings together K-8 students from different backgrounds to write, compose, design, rehearse, and perform original opera.

Here’s what we’re building:

  • A diverse community
    • Despite being one of the most progressive cities in the United States, San Francisco’s students are more segregated than ever — 30% attend a school dominated by a single race or ethnic group. Our students deserve better, which is why we bring students of all backgrounds and abilities together to build a community that’s as diverse as our city is.

  • Ambitiously comprehensive arts education
    • Students experience 6 art forms (music composition, writing, singing, acting, dance, and design) as they create their final masterpiece: A Little Opera. While this might sound extravagant, opera just means ‘work’, and that’s exactly what our students do!

  • 100% Student Imagined

"Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were. But without it we go nowhere.” –Carl Sagan

    • We encourage our students to go beyond their own lives, and into their imagination. Why? Because a future you can't imagine is a future you will never reach.

100% of your donation goes to making this program affordable and accessible for every single one of our students.

Little Opera's 3rd Annual Winter Preview Concert

A sneak peek at what students are creating in Season 7

Please join us for Little Opera’s 3rd annual winter preview concert on Wednesday, December 20th. Over the course of the evening four classes will take the stage to present the very first songs they’ve composed for this season’s student-written operas. As an added treat, members of our Teaching Artist team (practicing vocalists, composers, and musicians) will perform short works. The concert begins at 6:00pm, with a reception to follow.
