Portlight-Nepal Earthquake Fund

Supporting the disability community in Nepal

Search and rescue efforts and initial damage assessments continue in the aftermath of the recent earthquakes in Nepal. The United Nations reported that 8 million people have been affected, and according to Nepal’s Home Ministry, the death toll has risen to 4,352, with over 8,000 people injured.

By all accounts, the atmosphere is still very chaotic, and reliable information is scarce, particularly with respect to the rugged countryside outside Kathmandu, closer to the quakes’ epicenter. Expanding search and rescue efforts into these remote villages continues to be problematic, but it is rumored that some of them may have been completely leveled. It is expected that the number of dead and injured will increase sharply as responders gain access.

We know that in any emergency or disaster, people who live with some form of disability are disproportionally affected. Emergencies can increase the number of people who experience disability, both short and long-term, due to injuries sustained and lack of effective medical services. When an earthquake strikes, multiple fractures and spinal cord injuries are very common due to building collapses. Appropriate care must be given quickly to prevent long-term consequences.

Over the last several days, we have connected with disability stakeholders in Nepal, India and Pakistan, seeking their input as we considered how Portlight could best help our brothers and sisters affected by this devastating catastrophe. We have determined that we can be of the most service by raising funds to directly support the relief and recovery efforts of these and other in-country stakeholder organizations.

We ask you to consider donating what you can to help those who are working tirelessly to help Nepal's disability community in this time of great need. Nothing we do is possible without you, and we are, as always, eternally grateful for your continued support!
